Here at Beautiful Betsy we believe in love at first sight and hold ‘try before you buy’ Events up and down the country.  If you know that Betsy is for you but are not sure of which colour to choose you can send in a small swatch of your hair or email a ‘true to life’ colour photo to hello@beautifulbetsy.co.uk and we will advise you on which standard colour will be the best option. We are here to help you make the right decision, please make use of our expertise and free advice. However before agreeing to purchase, please consider the following:

#1 Have you come to terms with the fact that you need to wear hair? We know that this is a deeply personal and for some a painful purchase, if you are not sure, you are probably not at the stage you need to be. For many women Betsy is an ‘epiphany’ and a light bulb moment but in our experience that can only happen after a period of acceptance.

#2 Please remember that Betsy comes ‘freestyle’ and requires cutting and styling in a way that looks like you, its not a matter of will she suit you straight out of the box, in her non styled form, probably not but you have to make her your own. So if you are unsure please call us to discuss.

#3 Please measure your head from front to back and side to side to ensure that the cap size is right for you and will provide the coverage you need.

If you receive the wrong colour then you can of course exchange the piece. Simply get in touch with Betsy HQ and let us know that you wish to return Betsy to us in exchange for another colour. We will issue you with an exchange number.
Pop her back in the packaging in the same condition she was received and return by Royal Mail Signed For® 1st Class within 3 days.

Once received we will send the exchange piece to you.

All Returns for Refund will incur a charge of £35.

Exchanges & Returns/Refunds are not possible on items that have been made to order.

Please, we beg of you, if you are not going to keep Betsy make sure you don’t wear, wash or style her as we will be unable to issue an exchange which will make everyone unhappy.

Similar to the monotop the strands of hair are knotted into a mesh base but are then concealed by a layer of flesh coloured silk fabric so that the knots are below the silk. The hair lengths are then pulled back through the silk material making the knots 100% invisible and giving the illusion that the hair is actually growing out of the scalp

A monofilament top or monotop hair piece has a transparent or flesh coloured mesh like material on the base. Individual hair strands are knotted into the mesh resulting in a realistic scalp appearance.

Its almost impossible to photograph the colour of the hair and be certain that it looks the same on all monitors but we have given it our best shot using the Betsy mannequins here in natural daylight. Remember its completely natural and indeed very fashionable to wear hair a little darker underneath but if you are really not sure we would recommend you send a swatch of hair or email a true to life photo to Betsy HQ.

DECISIONS ABOUT COLOUR

CaN I COLOUR BETSY?

We cannot possibly replicate every colour of hair so we actively encourage the responsible *dyeing and toning of Betsy. There are a couple of rules:

* Never use product that contains Ammonia
* Always conduct a strand test
* If you only want a slight change in shade try a colour enhancing shampoo
* We recommend using semi-permanent dye such as L’Oreal Casting Creme
* All our Blondes are left light enough for you or your hairdresser to tone to a shade of your liking.

* If you are not confident in colouring then we always recommend seeking the advice and care of a hair stylist.

Colour Washing

The easiest way to achieve an all over colour effect is to Colour Wash your Betsy.

Remember to always use a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the colour you want to achieve and perform a strand test using a watered down colour mix.

  • Fill bowl with approximately 0.5 litres of lukewarm water.
  • Mix half of your demi permanent colour (without ammonia), we use L’Oreal Casting Creme which can be mixed 1:1 (developer and colour).
  • Add the colour to the bowl and stir.
  • Add Betsy, swish her about for a minute then lay in the water with the base facing upwards so that all the hair is evenly covered.
  • Check every 5 minutes and when you have reached the depth of colour required, rinse and condition.

If the resulting shade is too strong, wash with Head & Shoulders and condition really well…… it will take the colour down a couple of shades.

Rooted using L'Oreal Casting Creme and toned with Redken Shades EQ
All Colours Achieved Using Linen asthe Base

Depending on the style and length of your natural hair beneath you can pull your hair back in a ponytail, bun or headband and run and exercise whilst wearing her but in our opinion you should perhaps wear an alternative head covering such as a bandana or cap and keep Betsy for your less active pursuits.

Depending on the density and length Betsy can weigh between 60 and 85 grams. I have worn heavier toppers that are denser than my own hair and because of the weight move constantly during wear……. its the constant movement that causes damage and discomfort. Its good practice to re-position the clips every week or so or sew more clips in and rotate usage if your hair/head is super sensitive but the best solution is to have more than one piece with clips in different places and wear on rotation.
Since wearing Betsy my hair has improved because I am not constantly faffing about with my it, applying product and whatnot to it and generally feeling very unhappy about the state of it. Betsy means I can leave my own hair to do what it needs to do. My hair will never recover completely because of Lupus so I have already gone through the will it or wont it come back routine …….. many years ago I made the decision to find a ‘hair wear’ solution rather than torture myself any further. Right now my hair is healthier than it has been for a long time and is a good foundation for Betsy.

Most ‘Hair You Wear’ has been heavily processed and Betsy is no exception. If you have never had to take care of bleached/dyed hair then we would recommend that you take some time to understand what extra steps need to be taken to keep it in good condition. Betsy is made of real remy human hair and can be cut, dyed and heat styled. Just like your own hair, its important you find the products that work best on your Betsy. These are our top tips for keeping her in the best condition:

  • Use a hairbrush or wide tooth comb that is infused with argan oil because Betsy cannot produce oil of her own and when required moisturise with Sachajuan Intensive Hair Oil. When moisturising, section off the hair and apply the oil from root to tip ensuring that all the hair has been treated.
  • Always let Betsy dry naturally after washing, place her on a wig stand away from direct heat and leave till dry. Once dry you can use heat defence spray to dampen and protect her before heat styling.
  • Before heat styling Betsy, use a heat defence spray to protect her. Always blow dry on a low heat setting. Set curling iron or straightener between 120 (Light Density) and 160 degrees (Medium Density), the lower the better. Betsy is so well behaved and because you don’t sleep in her will retain styling for days. I wear my hair in a wavy/curly/messy way but if you want her to be sleek and smooth, you will need to find the product that enables you to achieve that look.
  • Use dry shampoo on your natural hair to give it a bit of ooomph beneath Betsy but do not use it on Betsy, loading her up with unnecessary product will mean more washing, more styling and will lessen the amount of time she looks beautiful.
  • Oil your hair in between washes. Not all hair oils work well but we can recommend Sachajuan Intensive Hair Oil, Betsy is a fan. Please make sure that when applying hair oil you do so  sparingly to the whole piece. This will require you to section the hair and apply from root to tip and throughout the density. Only use a drop of oil, remember its better to reapply more often than ‘overproduct’ and weigh Betsy down.

No, we don’t recommend that you do.

Number 1 priority when taking care of Betsy is to prevent her going dry and coarse. Everything we do from brushing to heat styling needs to be considered an opportunity to nourish, enhance and prolong the colour. This list is not exhaustive but we will add to it regularly so please check back.

There are simply loads of videos and how to guides out on the wonderful webulator but my preferred method is as follows:

  • Fill a bowl with cool to lukewarm water, never hot.
  • Squirt in a tablespoon of your shampoo and give it a swirl – don’t expect bubbles if you are using organic shampoo 😉
  • Place Betsy in the bowl and leave her to soak for a couple of minutes then gently swish her about…… similar to if you were hand washing a very delicate silk. Your ultimate aim is for her not to get tangled so try to maintain a backwards and forward motion and keep the hair in one direction. When swishing hold Betsy at the back, the most delicate part of any hair piece is the front and around the parting, try to keep your handling of this part to a minimum.
  • I like to rinse Betsy off under running water and do this using a detachable shower head but if that’s not possible then simply rinse her in a clean bowl of cool water using the same swishing action used when shampooing.
  • Dab her gently with a towel to remove excess water ….. be careful not to rub.
  • Place a tablespoon sized amount of conditioner in one hand and starting at mid length smooth the conditioner down to the ends of the hair. Carefully apply conditioner closer to the cap (I use a wide toothed comb) to ensure that I condition the whole piece, including the shorter ends closest to the base.
  • Leave the conditioner in for a few minutes then rinse in cool water, either by swishing or placing under running water.
  • Do a final Cold rinse to close the hair cuticle.
  • Place on a towel and press gently to remove excess water – don’t wring, rub or squeeze.
  • Pop Betsy on a wig stand, loosely arrange the parting but try not to brush and leave to dry naturally.
  • Once dry, gently brush and style to your liking using a heat defence product.
  • If you want a sleek and smooth finish then you will need to use a product that enables you to achieve the look.

Betsy was designed to be an affordable solution for women with fine, thin, thinning hair and patchy hair loss. The standard base at 5 x 6 inches is in our experience the optimum size and fits most heads. However other sizes can be ordered, simply email hello@beautifulbetsy.co.uk  to enquire.

The official answer is approximately 6 – 12 months if a full time wearer and you take care of her as advised.  Age will make her drier and coarser, however it also means she is more textured and when she is a little older she maintains curls and waves for a lot longer. (Watch the video below to learn more). We use quality braid hair during manufacture meaning that the majority (if not all) of the hair on a Betsy has come from one donor and its important to find the product that works best on it, this may differ to the ones that work on your own hair. What we do know is that you cannot moisturise enough……too much washing, using products that do not nourish the hair, heat styling without using heat defense products and brushing when wet are the main things to avoid. Over time Betsy will become coarser particularly if you heat style and eventually hair will start to break and shed from the cap, that I am afraid is simply the nature of hair you wear…… If you are a part time wearer and only wear on the odd night out or special occasion then Betsy will last you for much longer, remember whether a full or part time wearer, Betsy should be washed every 30 wears only. Yes, Yes, Yes…… just like your natural hair, Betsy can get sun damaged and you need to protect her. During manufacture Betsy will have gone though quite a brutal chemical dyeing process and overtime (through washing and sun exposure) the colour she has been dyed will fade and change. Use a colour enhancer shampoo and conditioner (at least) every 3rd wash to extend the life of the colour. The good news is that you can dye Betsy, she takes colour well so there are always options and exciting choices …… use non permanent colour that’s kind to hair (no bleach etc.) and you will find that by dyeing her you will get a little boost of loveliness back just like you would when dyeing your natural hair.
