If you have found yourself down a rabbit hole of hair topper research at midnight, wondering what on earth a monofilament base is and whether you need one, you are in exactly the right place.

I am Paula, founder of Beautiful Betsy, and I have been wearing real human hair toppers for years. Before I started this brand in 2016, I was in your position, overwhelmed, confused, and desperately wanting to find something that would make me feel like myself again without having to become a hair wear expert overnight.
So here is the honest, no fluff guide I wish I had found.
What Exactly Is a Hair Topper?
A hair topper, sometimes called a wiglet, top piece, or crown piece is a hairpiece designed to cover a specific area of the scalp, most commonly the top and crown where thinning or hair loss tends to appear first in women.
Unlike a full wig, a topper integrates with your own hair. It clips in place, blends with your natural hair at the sides, and when it is fitted correctly, looks completely indistinguishable from your own hair.
They are particularly brilliant for women experiencing diffuse thinning, a widening parting, or early-to-mid stage hair loss who still have enough hair around the sides and back to blend with.
Hair Topper vs Wig — What Is the Difference?
This is one of the most common questions I hear. The key difference is coverage and integration.
- A wig covers your entire head and replaces all visible hair.
- A hair topper covers a specific area, usually the top and blends with your own hair.
For women in the earlier stages of hair loss, a topper is often the more natural looking and more comfortable option. It is also considerably lighter and easier to wear day to day.
Real Human Hair vs Synthetic — Which Should You Choose?
At Beautiful Betsy, all of our toppers are made from real human hair. Here is why that matters.
Real human hair moves, responds to heat, and behaves exactly like your own hair. You can wash it, blow dry it, curl it, and straighten it. It blends more naturally with your natural hair and tends to last significantly longer with proper care.
Synthetic toppers can look lovely initially, but they cannot tolerate heat styling, they do not blend as seamlessly, and they typically need replacing more frequently. For a woman wearing her topper daily, real human hair is almost always the better long term investment.
The Most Important Factor Nobody Talks About — The Base
Here is what I tell every single client who comes to me for a consultation: the hair gets all the attention, but the base is what makes or breaks a topper.
The base is the foundation — the part that sits against your scalp. It determines how natural the parting looks, how comfortable the topper is to wear, and how well it integrates with your own hairline.
The key things to understand about topper bases:
- Base size — This should roughly match the area of thinning you want to cover. Bigger is not always better. A base that is too large can draw attention to the hairline.
- Base material — Monofilament bases allow hair to be parted in any direction and look extremely natural at the scalp. Silk bases give an even more realistic scalp appearance. Lace bases are lighter and breathable.
- Attachment — Our toppers attach with pressure sensitive clips. Make sure there is enough of your own hair to clip into comfortably.
How to Colour Match Your Topper
Colour matching is an art, and getting it right makes the difference between a topper that disappears into your hair and one that sits on top like a hat. As its not possible for Betsy to stock every colour of hair, all of our collection can be dyed and toned to any colour you wish.
My advice: always aim to get close to the tones of the mid lengths and ends of your hair rather than the roots. Roots are often darker and will naturally shadow the topper attachment area. If in doubt, go slightly lighter rather than darker, you or your hairdresser can always add darker shades to your topper.
At Beautiful Betsy, we guide every client through colour matching as part of our consultation process. It is not something you need to figure out alone.
